Full time courses within the motor industry.

S&B Automotive academy are offering a taster Vocational Related Qualification. These taster sessions will run for 4 weeks (8 days in total) and this is an opportunity for you to get an idea of what the academy can do for you. During this time you will work in all areas of the academy, including the heavy vehicle, motorcycle, light vehicle and body and paint departments. For more information click here.

Foundations for the future

A four phase plan to significantly re-develop the Academy site over the next three years is well underway. A brand new, ‘eco-friendly’ building will house workshops for mechanical and electrical apprentice training, as well as a fitness centre and breakout rooms and communal areas, plus a bespoke training facility for sector product training. This will be supported by S&B’s industry partners, which will assist with the internal design of the new building, equipment provision, training systems and vehicles.

Early 2011 saw a major cosmetic facelift of the cladding on all existing buildings to reflect S&B’s modern brand identity and also during this year, the final phase hopes to see the completion of the campus by the closing of Princess Street to allow unhindered access to all buildings.

ATA expansion

Responding to increased industry demand for Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA) assessments, S&B has expanded its facilities with a dedicated section for testing vehicle damage assessors.

The Academy has grown by a further 1,137sq m to facilitate extra capacity for carrying out ATA assessments, in particular, for technicians from the body repair sector. Many insurance companies have specified that approved repairers in their networks must have industry accredited technicians and the ATA scheme satisfies this requirement.

Work is underway to construct two new workshops complete with specialist accident damage equipment later this year. One will be set up to provide training on body and paint while the other will be dedicated to mechanical and engineering training. A new module to the ATA scheme is vehicle parts and a dedicated parts counter is being built which will be used in future testing of parts staff.

S&B now offers the full suite of ATA assessments and is the only organisation in the West of England to do so.  Further information about ATA can be found at www.automotivetechnician.org.uk.

Links with Avon and Somerset Police

Many of our young learners have the opportunity to attend one of the following courses using S&B’s links with Avon and Somerset Police. Project KickStart is delivered to those who ride or wish to ride Motorcycles and Mopeds. Choice and Consequence is delivered to those who drive or wish to drive Cars and Vans or Lorries. Those attending the programmes benefit from both classroom based discussions, accompanied by presentations and two 10 minute track sessions using Go-Karts. The mix of education and use of Go-Karts not only appeals to this age group, but also demonstrates the need to be able to identify and negotiate hazards. The classroom based session covers aspects of law, the responsibilities of owning and driving a vehicle and the consequences of failing to do so. Further details can be found at http://www.avonandsomerset.police.uk, then type kickstart in the search bar.
